Job Description
McDonald's operates 37,000+ restaurants across 120+ countries. Technology deployment into our vast system is complex and lengthy. As McDonald's continues to innovate and disrupt the restaurant industry, we are looking to add a technical director to define and drive a transformed deployment and support approach as we deploy new solutions into the restaurants, in order to speed up and modernize our methods and toolsets. Easy deployment to such a significant ecosystem will only come through advanced engineering and technical solutions.
The Drive Thru Product Engineering Director position will split time between our Innovation Center in Romeoville, IL and our headquarters in Chicago, IL.
What you'll be doing:

  • Lead development activities for Drive Thru technologies including the digital menu board content management system, drive thru timers, vehicle detection, customer identification and personalization, audio and other drive thru hardware.
  • Drive a technical vision for your products, lead technical exploration and partner selection activities when needed, and lead a distributed development organization to deliver your products.
  • Lead standardization/transformation efforts for drive thru technology across markets. Establish and drive adoption of global standards.
  • Own the technology product roadmap for a portfolio of custom developed and third-party vendor applications, as well as hardware technologies, that balances new features with innovation.
  • Oversee a team of product engineering managers, analysts, vendors, and development squads to ensure timely, high-quality, efficient delivery of roadmaps to enhance the drive thru customer experience.
  • Guide teams to build and execute experiments to validate, optimize, and prioritize features; design tests to validate technology solutions in support of business use cases and provide input to business cases.
  • Utilize market and technology knowledge to translate user needs into technical solutions, assisting product engineering managers with breakdown of user stories and acceptance criteria for implementation.
  • Manage internal and external teams for on-time delivery.
  • Drive initiatives to improve quality by focusing on upstream testing and test automation; automate testing where feasible.
  • Partner with Vendor Management Office to influence drive thru technology vendor roadmaps and product evolution.
  • Guide teams and establish agile development and release processes with smaller, more frequent high quality releases.
  • Partner with market adoption teams to drive deployment of new drive thru technologies in support of drive thru initiatives.
  • Provide executive updates on progress of programs and initiatives.
  • Establish KPIs to measure performance of the teams.
    Qualifications
    Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination required.
  • Computer Science / Engineering degree
  • 10+ years of technically focused experience
  • 5+ years of engineering leadership responsibility; leading engineering teams and making technical decisions as well as interfacing with business stakeholders
  • 5+ years of Agile Technical Product Management experience, preferably on customer-facing products leading agile development teams
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills; skills in research and analysis
  • A passion for innovation and superior problem-solving skills
  • A passion for new technologies and the drive to find ways to implement better tools and processes
  • Retail or Hospitality technology experience; in-store technology experience a plus
  • Software vendor management experience; hardware vendor management a plus
  • Strong communication skills and proven track record driving change through influence
  • Experience leading cross-functional and distributed teams and leading indirect reports to achieve organizational goals
  • Strong ability to communicate, as well as collaborate, with engineers, project managers, corporate leadership, and partners
  • Experience working in a global, matrixed environment a plus
