What you do in your job will depend on the type of role you take, though most jobs will require the basics of animal care. You could be working in a variety of locations, from zoos to farms, private practices to clients’ homes. You will also probably need to have some level of customer/client interaction experience/skills, as many people can get very distressed when their pet/animal is in ill health. You may also occasionally be in danger of harm from animals themselves, with biting, scratching, and other injuries very possible. Your duties could include conducting assessments, clerical work, dispensing and monitoring medications, conducting operations, and more.

The education you need will depend on the type of role you want to pursue. If you want to be a veterinarian, for instance, you will need to achieve a Doctor of Veterinary medicine from an accredited university and have a few years’ experience. However, if you want to become a veterinary technician, a bachelor’s degree will be sufficient, along with passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam and joining NAVTA.
