Your role as an engineer will vary widely depending on your specialization and industry. In general, engineers are tasked with solving problems using science and math for products and/or systems. Engineers tend to spend a lot of time coming up with solutions to these problems. This means gathering data to inform decisions that will affect the design or construction of a product or system.
Once research is conducted, analysis is done through testing, production, and maintenance to see if the solutions put forward are workable. Scientific and mathematical principles must be brought to bear on the processes in question to illuminate the state of the system under study. Analysis finds what works in the design and processes and what does not. Once an analysis is completed, components can be changed and then reintroduced to the whole for more testing.
The systems you will deal with as an engineer depend on your industry. A nuclear engineer will work with particle accelerators and nuclear reactors, whereas a biomedical engineer will work with medical equipment and devices. Engineers can work in an array of different environments, from research laboratories, factories, building sites, power plants, and processing stations.
If you want to be an engineer, you must pick a specialization. You will also need to undertake a degree at a university in your chosen specialization. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has a list of the many different types of engineering jobs, the degree required, and the average salary expected in each role. Peruse this list to ensure you’re fulfilling all the requirements of your future engineering employer.
Engineering has a bright future in the US. The BLS expects engineering roles overall to grow by 4% by 2024. Certain fields, like biomedical engineering and environmental engineering, are expected to grow by 23% and 12% respectively. Engineering is also a famously stable and well-paying field, with the average salary of an engineer around $93,000. There are also new and exciting fields in engineering opening up with the advancement of new technologies, such as disaster recovery, 4D printing, bioelectronic medicine, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.
Being an engineer means solving problems. Many engineers find working every day to solve new problems incredibly rewarding. Engineering jobs are also very highly paid and stable, making them very attractive to students entering college or university.
Engineering is by its very nature a practical field, so people who are more theoretically oriented may find their imagination and creativity frustrated. Attaining a degree in engineering can be incredibly stressful and difficult. Once graduated from a program, competition for top jobs can be fierce. In many engineering jobs, industries are constantly changing. This requires engineers to constantly update their knowledge on new research and recent innovations.
