In its broadest sense, engineers are people who invent, design, test, build, and improve systems. These systems can be physical or digital, such as machines, buildings, electronics, consumer products, and software. Engineers work to solve problems, whether that’s creating something new or improving what’s already made. Your role as an engineer will vary widely depending on your specialization and industry. In general, engineers are tasked with solving problems using science and math for products and/or systems. Analysis finds what works in the design and processes and what does not. Once an analysis is completed, components can be changed and then reintroduced to the whole for more testing.
The systems you will deal with as an engineer depend on your industry. A nuclear engineer will work with particle accelerators and nuclear reactors, whereas a biomedical engineer will work with medical equipment and devices. Engineers can work in an array of different environments, from research laboratories, factories, building sites, power plants, and processing stations.
